Meeting with UE ambassadors in Israel

On Monday 29 April, 2019, as part of Yom HaShoah, the days of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust on 1 and 2 May, Georges Mayer, president of the Convoi 77 association, presented the progress of the European project Convoi 77 at the invitation of the European Union ambassador to Israel, Emanuele Giaufret.

This event brought together fifteen ambassadors and representatives of countries from which the deportees of convoy 77 originally came.

Emanuele Giaufret recalled at the meeting: “Information and education are key actions in our fight against anti-Semitism. The European Union was built in response to the horrors of the Holocaust and the Second World War. Remembering this and combating anti-Semitism is a both duty to our fellow European Jewish citizens and a necessary part of protecting our common European values. The European Union continues to promote and intensify educational initiatives, to fight sectarianism and to protect our Jewish fellow citizens”.

For Georges Mayer, president of the association Convoi 77, it is vital that young people become actively involved in educational projects, especially at a time when the last remaining witnesses to the Holocaust are becoming fewer and fewer. Mr. Mayer gave each of the ambassadors and representatives present a list of the convoy 77 deportees born in their countries. They were asked to become emissaries for this European project and to suggest that schools in their countries write biographies of these deportees.
